Compensation payments in Germany are not as high as in the USA. Nevertheless, the patient is entitled to ask for compensation for his financial and in many cases immaterial damage, providing he can prove a lack of medical diligence on the part of the doctor or hospital and that the damage wouldn't have occured without this malpractice.
Compensation requests can also be based on the claim that a doctor did not fulfill his duty to fully inform the patient.
